Personal

about my life in general, my friends, family, etc.

I'm grieving over the loss of the America that I thought existed. I know America still struggles against problems with racism and sexism, but I thought we were getting better. I thought the long arc of history was bending toward justice. I thought American ideals were to accept the world's tired, the world's poor, the world's huddled masses yearning to breathe free.

But it's not. And it hasn't been.

A year ago, in October of 2012, I attended the charity event I Survived Real Estate 2012. Theresa, Kyle, Tiffany and I have been attending this event for several years and we enjoy taking some photos while we are all dressed in our fancy clothes. The photo above is our "company photo" and as you can see, I look like Guido the Calculator Guy. However, 12 months and 53 lbs later, we recreated the photo. I have a neck! Also, the zoot suit jackets are not the same! Two years ago, I had to buy a larger zoot suit jacket because my original one was too small as I gained weight.

The summer has been tough for my weight loss progress, but I carry on!

To finish our vacation, we spent 4 days in beautiful Rome! (at least in the tourist-y part of Rome near Ancient Rome)

After Florence, we made a quick 1-day stop in Pisa. After all, if you're going to tour the country you kind of need to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, right?

The above image is the view from ON TOP of the Leaning Tower. Although the top of the Tower is surrounded by protective gates, so I had to stick my camera through a gap in the fence in order to get that shot. :)

These photos are cheesy, but we figured they were neccessary. :)

After 3 beautiful days in Venice, we hopped on a train to Firenze (Florence). We got into the city during the "dead zone" time of day when almost all of the restaurants are closed. It's a cultural thing, but the restaurants are mostly all closed between 3pm-7pm. After dumping our bags, we made our way out in an effort to find food and get our first glimpse of the city. We stood on a bridge over the River Arno and saw the beautiful view in the above photo.

Our vacation began in Venice! The canals are beautiful, as expected, but the city really doesn't have any streets. Like... no streets. It has alleys. Oh Brother, does it have alleys. They call those alleys "streets" but that is a gross misuse of the word "street." :) We spent three wonderfully lazy days in Venice, just wandering down random streets, seeing the sites and stepping into whatever random restaurant we happened to be standing next to when we were hungry.

I'm back! You might not know that I was gone, which was by-design for obvious security reasons. :)

For those who don't know, I do a bunch of Geek work for the US Open of Surfing. I did the development work for the usopenofsurfing.com website (a professional graphic artist created the artwork, but I developed the functionality), but I also worked with my best friend, Kyle, to produce a social-networking Photo Booth game for the on-beach event which run on a series of iOS devices. I made it down to 206 lbs during the month, but then the US Open of Surfing hit and I really couldn't control my food intake...

I don't remember what brought it up the other day, but we had a good laugh when we realized that in a house with 2 Christians and an Atheist that it was the Atheist who was the only one who was baptized. (It turned out, however, that two of us are baptized, so not as ironic as originally thought)

I thought it would still be amusing though to post about my baptism though because I have photos!
