RNC and the Lie of "You didn't build that"

You've heard it a hundred times before. Obama said that "If you've got a business, you didn't build that!" 

How dare he say I didn't build my business! He'd have to be pretty stupid to say something like that, right? 

This is one of those moments where your skepticism should immediately kick in and you should think, "That CAN'T be true" and then go check. 

The quote itself is correct, but it's missing the first half of the statement. It's taken out of context and the GOP's usage of it is demonstrably dishonest. So, it's really shocking to me that the GOP would build the entire theme of their convention on top of this false quote! The quote with a little bit of context is:

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business, you didn't build that! -- Barack Obama

THAT refers to the "unbelieable American system" and the "roads and bridges". His entire point was that you didn't succeed in a vacuum. He also didn't even say that it was all the government who helped you.

And he's right! I am a small business owner and I didn't get here all on my own. Yes, of course it wouldn't have happened without a lot of hard work, intelligently applied. However, to say that I did it all on my own without the help of anyone else... that's just plain false. 

I was well educated in Public school. I received Pell grants to help pay for my college education.  I've had amazing technical and financial teachers. I've got a great business partner and friend, Kyle (like a brother to me), who built this company with me. My personal business and my business with Kyle are Internet-based which, as much as Obama-haters want to deny, really REALLY was started by government programs. I am protected by the police and fire fighters. My real estate assets are protected by the court system. Beyond all of these external factors in my business, I am helped by the love and support from Theresa, my friends, and my family. 

I didn't build any of THAT.

The attack on Obama is a false attack and the GOP shows no shame in wilfully deceiving all Republicans across the nation.
